Glimpses of the Past
The Newport Beach City Arts Commission, in partnership with Sherman Library, presents Newport Beach: Glimpses of the Past, a special exhibition of historic photographs and other items from the archives of Sherman Library, on display at the Newport Beach Central Library gallery. The display includes photos from 1888 to 1966, including pictures of McFadden's Landing, the McFadden Hotel, the historic Balboa Pavilion in 1900, China House, Port Theater and other Newport Beach landmarks. Life in Newport Beach is captured in photographs of surfing championships, sailing regattas and bathing beauties.
For over fifty years Sherman Library has worked to preserve the history of Newport Beach and surrounding communities. The historic photographs in Newport Beach: Glimpses of the Past were selected by Paul Wormser, director of the Sherman Library and Gardens, from a collection of thousands of photographs, documents, and maps relating to Newport Beach at the Sherman Library.
Sherman Library, located in Corona del Mar, is a historical research library specializing in the history of the Pacific Southwest – including southern California, Arizona, northern Mexico and adjoining areas. The Library’s collections document the development of the region through books, archival collections, photographs, maps, aerial photographs, and newspapers. The Library is open to the public.
The exhibition will be on display at the Newport Beach Central Library from September 9 through November 1, 2019, during library operating hours. More information about cultural arts programs in the City of Newport Beach, go to the City’s Cultural Arts webpage at www.newportbeachca.gov/CulturalArts.
