Summer Reading Program Begins June 22

Saturday, June 22 - All locations

The Summer Reading Program is open to Children, Teens and Adults!

Travel the world and beyond this summer by participating in the summer reading programs - all ages. Win prizes for reading, review books and be sure to attend some of the fun summer events at the library.

Tiny

Adults of all ages
Newport Beach Public Library set the stage for a summer of great reading with a special program featuring local author Kim Hooper on Saturday, June 22.  Hooper will be introducing her newly released novel "Tiny."

The Dana Point author, who received a B.A. in communications from the University of California, San Diego and a master’s degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California, is the author of “People who Knew Me”, hailed as "refreshingly raw and honest" by The Wall Street Journal, and “Cherry Blossoms”, described as "fresh and inviting" by Publishers Weekly.

The event will kick off Newport Beach Public Library’s Adult Summer Reading Program, which begins June 22 and goes through August 10.  The program encourages adults to read and share book reviews with fellow book lovers throughout the summer.

Adults can join in the fun by taking part in their very own library reading program this summer, too! Each participant is automatically registered when they submit their first book review. Participants can read and review print books, downloadable materials and audiobooks. Submit online review form or pick up printed form at Reference Desk.

A Grand Prize drawing ticket will be entered for each review submitted. After submission of three (3) reviews, participants will be awarded a paperback book.

All adult program participants will be welcomed to join fellow readers for an end of the summer wrap-up reception with refreshments and prize drawings at the Central Library on Thursday, August 8.

Children ages 0-12
The Children’s Summer Reading Program will run from Saturday, June 22 to Saturday, August 10. Special programs featuring this year’s theme of “It's Showtime at Your Library!”are listed below.

Join the club by picking up a Summer Reading Program game sheet at any Newport Beach Public Library location to keep track of reading. On the game sheet, the reader will select one side to complete: either the Reading Club, for independent readers, or the Read-to-Me Club, for those reading with help. The Reading Club awards a special prize to readers after every five 20-minute sessions of reading. The Read-to-Me Club awards prizes to young readers after every five early literacy activities completed. Once the entire game sheet is completed, the independent and young readers will win a new book and be entered into the Grand Prize drawing. As a bonus, all children can enter weekly drawings at their local branch by writing and/or illustrating book reviews!

Younger children can enjoy participating in the Summer Reading Program by listening to stories and completing early literacy activities, while independent readers can practice their reading skills and develop a love of literature all on their own. Participants can read print books, downloadable materials and audiobooks. Children are not limited to reading library materials, and are strongly encouraged to read what they love (books, graphic novels, etc.), track their own reading progress, and reap the benefits of an instilled love of reading with the encouragement and support of parents and library staff.

Upon completion of the program, children are encouraged to keep reading and enter weekly drawings by filling out book review forms.
