Make a Difference in Your Community
Do you have a passion for helping others overcome literacy challenges? Join Newport Beach Public Library's Project Adult Literacy (PAL) Program as a volunteer tutor. You will help adult learners develop lifelong reading, writing, and communication skills while connecting with a dedicated community of volunteers and staff.
How to Become a Volunteer Tutor
To be eligible as a volunteer tutor, you must:
-
Be at least 24 years of age.
-
Complete our Online Orientation and attend our two-day Volunteer Tutor Training Sessions (8 hours total).
-
Have a valid email address and proficient computer skills.
-
Successfully pass a background check.
-
Commit to meeting with a learner for at least one hour per week for one year.
-
Be willing to submit monthly progress reports and attend training events as necessary.
You do not need a background in teaching to be a successful tutor. We provide the training and resources you need to help someone achieve their goals.
The 5-Step Onboarding Process
-
Complete our 20-25 minute Online Orientation to learn about the program. After the orientation, you will be prompted to submit a short application.
-
Based on your application, you will be invited to our upcoming two-day Volunteer Tutor Training sessions. You must attend both days to receive the full 8 hours of required training.
-
After training, you must complete a background check through the Newport Beach Police Department. This process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks.
-
Once your background check clears, we will match you with a learner. This process takes approximately 1 to 2 months, depending on current availability and preferences.
-
Throughout the year, PAL offers in-person and virtual trainings, peer support socials, and community events to help you stay connected and supported.
