Tutors and Volunteers


Are you looking for a way to make a difference and give back to your community? Do you have a passion for helping others with the literacy challenges in our community? Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Then we encourage you to join Newport Beach Library’s Project Adult Literacy (PAL) program as a tutor or volunteer where you will help adult learners develop lifelong reading and writing skills.

We are always looking for dedicated community members who can help adults develop their literacy skills - reading and writing. As a PAL volunteer tutor, you will have the opportunity to interact with Library staff and the Literacy community. Come join the fun! 

Volunteer Positions:

  • Volunteer Tutor - Open
  • Office Volunteer - FULL
  • Event Committee Volunteer -FULL
  • Social Media Volunteer -FULL

Volunteer tutors do not need to have a background in teaching, nor do they need to know how to teach.

Volunteer Tutor applicants must: 

  • Be at least 24 years of age
  • Complete our Online Orientation and two-day Volunteer Tutor Training sessions 
  • Must have a valid email address and proficient knowledge of computer use
  • Have the desire to help somebody else achieve their goal
  • Successfully pass a Background Check
  • Be able to commit to meeting their learner for a minimum of one hour per week for one year
  • Willingness to complete and submit reports as requested
  • Willingness to attend trainings and events as necessary

Step 1: Online Orientation & Application

Complete a short 20-25 minute Online Orientation to learn more about our program. At the end of the Online Orientation, please complete a short application and share why you are interested in volunteering with our program.

Step 2: Attend Volunteer Tutor Training

Based on your application, you will be invited to attend our two-day Volunteer Tutor Training. This two-day training is mandatory for all new volunteer tutors and you must attend both days of training. You will receive a total of 7 hours of training.

Step 3: Complete Background Check

Once you have completed your two-day Volunteer Tutor Training, you must undergo a background check through the Newport Beach Police Department. This process can take 2-4 weeks.

Step 4: Get Matched with a Learner

Once your background check is cleared, you will be matched with a learner. This process can take 1-2 months depending upon availability and preferences.

Step 5: Feedback & Support

There are several in-person and virtual trainings, peer support socials and events that take place throughout the year where you can meet and connect with other volunteers and tutors.
