Following the events of Dune: Messiah, Paul’s two children, twins named Leto and Ghanima, are now nine years old. They already are very wise, having the knowledge of all their ancestors combined, also being able to “invite” those ancestors by letting them take over their bodies. By using that knowledge, the twins realize their aunt Alia is possessed by the soul of a long dead-but still dangerous-relative. Meanwhile, the planet all of them live on, Dune, is slowly being transformed from a desert wasteland to a thriving world, attracting more tourists and residents to the cities. Unfortunately, this change would kill the worms living on the planet that made the valued spice, causing a drastic difference. The soul of the relative, however, wants that to happen. As the ecosystem changes, Leto worries about his future, a ruler of a fallen House plans to gain power, and a new figure enters: The Preacher, believed to be Paul in disguise. Paul’s mother, the Lady Jessica, comes to visit and sees Alia’s misfortune, but doesn’t see any signs of that occurrence in the twins. The twins in question notice they are being plotted against and run away to the desert, but only Ghanima returns. Leto goes elsewhere, searching for a legendary city that may or may not exist. He manages to find the city, but it is now long faded and occupied by rebels who want to take down the government. Forced to undergo a trance, Leto realizes there is only one path to humanity’s survival: one which his father would not take.  

This book was very good, and I liked the storyline of it. The twins were interesting characters. Even though they have almost infinite wisdom, they aren’t cocky or innocently genius, which I am grateful for. They know they have all their ancestors’ memories and don’t rub it in people’s faces. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the places and characters: it adds lots of feeling and context to the story. My personal favorite was the lost city Leto finds. It was very big and twisted, adding to Leto’s feelings while in the city.

The most interesting part was the politics involved. From matricide to corruption, Children of Dune has the most exciting government action out of the three books so far (in my opinion). The stand offs are very intense and there is fighting too, so lovers of action and violence can be interested in the content of the book. However, in the book, there are mentions of incest, as Leto thinks about marrying his sister to continue the Atreides bloodline. There are also mentions of inappropriate things like nudity.

Although there are a few trigger warnings, Children of Dune is a very good book. Next I’ll be reviewing God Emperor of Dune, the fourth book in the series.

Estoy reseñando Children of Dune, el tercer libro de la serie Dune de Frank Herbert. Viene antes de Dios Emperador de Dune y después de Dune: Mesías.

Después de los eventos de Dune: Messiah, los dos hijos de Paul, los gemelos Leto y Ghanima tienen nueve años. Ya son muy sabios, porque tienen las memorias de todos sus ancestros combinados, y también pueden "invitar" a esos ancestros para controlar sus cuerpos. Al usar ese conocimiento, los gemelos se dan cuenta de que su tía Alia está poseída por el alma de un pariente muerto hace mucho tiempo, pero aún peligroso. Mientras tanto, el planeta en el que todos ellos viven, Dune, se está transformando lentamente de un desierto grande a un mundo próspero, atrayendo a más turistas y residentes a las ciudades. Desafortunadamente, este cambio mataría a los gusanos que vivían en el planeta que producía la especie apreciada, causando una diferencia drástica. Se las arregla para encontrar la ciudad, pero ahora está descolorida y ocupada por rebeldes que quieren derrocar al gobierno. Obligado a entrar en trance, Leto se da cuenta de que solo hay un camino para la supervivencia de la humanidad: uno que su padre no tomaría.

Este libro era muy bueno, y a mi me gustaba la historia. Los gemelos eran personajes interesantes. A pesar de que tienen una sabiduría casi infinita, no son arrogantes ni inocentemente geniales, por lo que estoy agradecido. Saben que tienen todos los recuerdos de sus antepasados y no se lo restriegan a la gente. También disfruté las descripciones de los lugares y personajes: agrega mucho sentimiento y contexto a la historia. Mi favorito personal fue la ciudad perdida que encuentra Leto. Era muy grande y retorcido, lo que aumentaba los sentimientos de Leto mientras estaba en la ciudad.

La parte más interesante fue la política involucrada. Del matricidio a la corrupción, Children of Dune tiene la acción gubernamental más emocionante de los tres libros hasta ahora (en mi opinión). Los enfrentamientos son muy intensos y también hay peleas, por lo que los amantes de la acción y la violencia pueden estar interesados en el contenido del libro. Sin embargo, en el libro, hay menciones de incesto, ya que Leto piensa en casarse con su hermana para continuar con el linaje Atreides. También hay menciones de cosas inapropiadas como la desnudez.

Aunque hay algunas advertencias de activación, Children of Dune es un muy buen libro. A continuación, revisaré God Emperor of Dune, el cuarto libro de la serie.
