Central Library Lower Level
  • Administration: The Administration Office is located on the Lower Level and is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Art Exhibits: Cultural Arts Services presents exhibits by local artists in the gallery space located in the Lower Level lobby of Central Library.  These exhibits are sponsored by the Newport Beach City Arts Commission.   • Audio Books: NBPL has a large collection of audio books in the Popular Library area on the Lower Level. Audio books can also be downloaded to computers and mobile devices from the Libby. Customers can also check out iPod shuffle devices with pre-loaded audio books.
  • Bamboo Courtyard: The Bamboo Courtyard is located outside the Friends Meeting Room on the Lower Level.  It was named in honor of a gift presented by Sister City Okazaki in 1994 to commemorate the opening of the Central Library.  It is frequently used as a reception area for Library events, in addition to everyday use as an outdoor study area.
  • Book Returns: Convenient drop boxes are located at lower level entrance to the library and the parking garage.  Additional book returns are inside the Central Library on the upper level and next to the Friends Bookstore on the lower level.
  • Children’s Room: The spacious Children's Room is designed for use by children and accompanying adults. Juvenile collections can be found in this area, as well as reading and study space, the Stahr Storytime Room and a special performance area.  A "children's only" restroom, garden and child-friendly computers are also located in this area.
  • Conference Room: The Conference Room is located near the Administration Office and is used for small library and civic meetings.
  • DVDs/Blu-rays: the Popular Library contains a large variety of DVDs, including classics, foreign films, and popular movies. Many new movies are available on high tech Blu-rays.
  • Friends of the Library Used Bookstore: Voted the "Best Used Book Store" in Orange County, the Friends Bookstore is located at the Lower Level entrance to the Central Library. Proceeds from book sales are used to fund a variety of Newport Beach Public Library programs and services. Used book donations are always appreciated.
  • Friends Discovery Garden: An outdoor oasis with seating, shade, a fountain and kid-friendly maze is accessed from the Children's Room and is reserved exclusively for use by children and accompanying adults.
  • Friends Meeting Room: Lectures, meetings, concerts and other special programs are held in the Friend Meeting Room, located on the Lower Level.
 
  • Friendship Statue: The Friendship statue is prominently positioned in front of the Central Library.  The Nakayoshi (meaning friendship) sculpture was a gift presented to the City of Newport Beach in 1984 by its Sister City, Okazaki, Japan and moved from City Hall to its present location in 1999 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the relationship between Okazaki and Newport Beach.
  • Holds Shelf: Reserve library materials using the online Catalog and pick it up from the Hold Shelf near the Lower Level entrance.
  • Internet Access: All areas of the Central Library, including the outdoor patios and bridge received WiFi service. Instructions for accessing the free service with your NBPL Library Card are available from Customer Service staff.
  • Literacy Services: The offices of Newport/Mesa ProLiteracy are located on the Lower Level near the Administration Office. Interested adult learners and volunteer tutors are welcome to stop by during office hours, Monday-Friday.
  • Magazines and Newspapers: current copies of a variety of local and popular magazines and newspapers are located in the Popular Library downstairs at the Central Library.  Older editions are upstairs near the Non-fiction  and Biography sections
  • Media Center: The Media Center, including a Sound Room, is located at the end of the Lower Level hallway near the elevator and staircase. State-of-the-art equipment and software for graphic design, video production, music recording and architectural design is available for use with The PC and Mac computers. More information on policies and equipment can be found on the website.
  • Music CDs: CDs with classical, rock, alternative music, and other musical genres are located in the Popular Library on the Lower Level.
  • NBPL Foundation Office: The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation contributes significantly to library, both in funding and programming. Offices are located on the Lower Level, adjacent to the Passport Services offices.
  • Restrooms: Restrooms are located on both the upper and lower levels of the Central Library.
  • Self-Checkout Machines: customers can check out library materials quickly and easily using the library card at self checkout machines located near the entrances/exits on both levels. The new self checkout machines employ RFID  technology (Radio Frequency IDentification) which  presents significant time savings for both library customers and staff. RFID tags are read much faster than from traditional barcodes and as a result, several items in a stack can be read at the same time increasing turn-around time by as much as 50 percent.

Central Library Upper Level

  • Fiction Collections: Fiction, Mystery, Science Fiction, Graphic Novels and paperback books are located in the east side of the Upper Level.
  • Non-fiction Collections: Non-fiction and biography are located on the west side of the Upper Level.
  • Copy Center: A copier, a large-format scanner and microfilm reader are currently located behind the Reference Desk on the Upper Level. A color printer is located on the Reference Desk.
  • Charles Sword Meeting Room: This award-winning room, with views of the Pacific Ocean, is in the southeast corner of the Upper Level.
  • Computers: There are 40 computers for free public use in the Central Library. In addition to the 30 public computers available in the computer area on the Upper Level, laptop computers and iPads can be checked out from the Reference Desk for use inside the Library.  Children's computers are located downstairs in the Children's Room.

 

 

  • Study Rooms: Three private study rooms are located on the Upper Level near the computers.  Rooms may be reserved by groups of two or more at the Reference Desk.
  • Restrooms: Restrooms are located on both the Upper and Lower Levels of the Central Library.
  • Local History Collection: Books and research materials specifically about Newport Beach and Orange County are located in this unique collection on the Upper Level near the computers and Study Rooms
  • Reference Desk: Library staff is always ready to help customers locate materials in the library or online. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk, located in the center of the Upper Level or at the Popular Library Information Desk on the Lower Level.
  • Teen Center: The Teen Center houses young adult fiction and paperback collections, graphic novels, new YA books. It has a number of study tables as well as a lounge seating area, displays of student art, and one of the best views in the library—on a clear day you can see Catalina Island.
