Let's write poetry!

We’d like to invite you to write some poetry with us in celebration of National Poetry Month. First time poets, non-readers, and book lovers of all kinds are welcome. We’re excited to see what you create!

Who can participate in the Poetry Party?

Children ages 3-12 are invited to submit up to five original poems.

How do I write a poetry?

Poems come in all types.  They can be short or long, rhyming or not. Just make them original. If you want to see examples of poems, take a look at the poetry resources, examples, and tools for non-readers.

How do I enter my poetry?

Just email your submission to juvref@newportbeachca.gov by April 30, 2021*. Poems will be accepted in three formats – text, photo, or audio recording. Be sure to include your name, age and contact information. We encourage you to let your creativity run free and to have fun! Reading your poem out loud helps it to come alive.

*By submitting a poem you give Newport Beach Public Library authorization to share your work on our social media and Poetry Party webpage for other NBPL Poets to enjoy.

Can I win a prize?

Everyone who participates in our Poetry Party will be entered into a drawing, and three lucky poets will each receive a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble!

How do I see what other young poets have submitted?

We want everyone to enjoy the poetry at this special party.  Poetry submissions will be posted on this website for everyone to see.

Happy writing Poets!
