Special Resource: Coping With Tragedies and Disasters

As images and news reports flood the airwaves and on-air personalities debate the nature of serious crimes or natural disasters, children and young adults are likely to have questions and concerns of their own. To help foster a dialog, the library has created a page that offers a number of resources for parents to be used for comforting young ones during these dark times.

Born Learning
Stages of development from birth to five years; developmental milestones, health issues and problems, care and nutrition for each stage, parenting skills, and safety.

KidsHealth
Physical and mental health and development, pregnancy, nutrition, parenting, diseases, first aid and more, with links to numerous related websites.

U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Resources
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers information on family issues such as adoption, child support, and domestic violence, with links to the Administration for Children and Families programs.

Homeschooling

California Homeschool Network
CHN is a grassroots organization committed to providing information and resources regarding homeschooling legislation, events such as group field trips and seminars, as well as guidance and support for parents educating their children at home.

Home School Association of California
The association keeps homeschooling parents up to date on legal issues and legislation, as well as posting events, providing support groups, and links to resources for lesson planning.

Tips on preparing your child for school, finding schools and childcare, encouraging academic success, special needs, and college and links to government  and other websites.

GreatSchools.net
Comparison of public, private and charter schools, k-12 in all fifty states. Includes tips on finding the right school for your child, school profiles and performance records and detailed information about each school.

This web portal assists with resources for incorporating technology in teaching.  An excellent student search center provides educational websites for students, with links for teachers on popular topics such as Native Americans and ancient civilizations.
