Genealogy Series Schedule - January-June 2018

Class Title: Intro to Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest
Date:  Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  Become familiar with and learn how to navigate the record collections available through the Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest databases. Through this class, participants will learn to perform basic and advanced searches in these two powerful genealogy databases to learn how to start or grow their family tree. Participants will use Media Lab computers to facilitate hands-on learning. Click here to register


Class Title: Organizing Genealogical Information and Setting Research Goals
Date:  Wednesday, January 31, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm 

Description:  The amount of information a genealogy researcher compiles can be overwhelming, having the ability to cloud the big picture, cause haphazard approaches to searching, and side-track research goals.  This class will explore a variety of tips and techniques that will help you create focused, efficient research plans and strategies as well as organize the information that you find in formats such as charts, timelines, tables, and spreadsheets, allowing you to identify patterns and contradictions in information as well as determine the most effective path forward for furthering your research. Click here to register


Class Title:  Evaluating Genealogical Records and Citing Sources
Date:  Wednesday, February 14, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  The strengths and weaknesses of data found in genealogical records, databases, and online websites are based upon the credibility, reliability, and quality of the data contained within the material. This class will explain how to classify and analyze sources, information, and evidence found in genealogical material; examine how those classifications help researchers identify and use the best quality material in their research; as well as review how to form clear and complete source citations to document the material supporting their research. Class Title:  United States Census Records
Date:   Wednesday, March 14, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  In addition to providing an insightful window into the life events of both individuals and family groups dating back to 1790, census records often provide the only documentation about ancestors when no other information exists. This class will explore the type of information found in federal and state census records as well as demonstrate how to use the information contained within them to further genealogy research. Class Title:  United States Immigration Records
Date:  Wednesday, March 28, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  With nearly fifty million people having immigrated to the United States dating back to the colonial era, immigration records provide a key link to tracing one’s lineage in an ancestor’s country of origin. This class will delve into passenger lists, naturalization records, citizenship records, and border crossings to help discover participants’ family immigration stories and further their research beyond the borders of the United States. Class Title:   United States Military Research
Date:  Wednesday, April 11, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  With millions of American citizens having served in the armed forces dating back to the colonial era, it is likely that one or more of your ancestors served or were eligible for service at some time in the military. This class will delve into draft, enlistment, service, casualty, and pension records that provide a wealth of genealogical information about our ancestors as well as a greater appreciation of the service they provided. Class Title:  United States Probate Research
Date:  Wednesday, April 25, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  Probate records often contain valuable genealogical data, including names and relationships of family members, death information, ages, and residences, among other helpful information. This class will investigate wills, probates, estate records, and guardianship records to learn why these court records must not be overlooked when conducting genealogy research. Class Title:  United States Land Records
Date:  Wednesday, May 9, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description: Valuable genealogical information concerning names of family members, relationships, and locations of residence can be discovered through tracing ancestral land ownership. This class will examine the type of information found in deeds, land grants, mortgages, and land ownership maps to unlock hidden genealogical information through the property owned by our ancestors. Class Title:  Researching English, Scottish and Welsh Ancestors
Date:  Wednesday, June 6, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description: Participants will acquire a solid foundation for their research in Great Britain, whether they are just beginning or have been researching their British ancestry for some time. This class will explore English, Scottish, and Welsh civil registration, census, church, and probate records as well as how to use the information contained within them to further their genealogy research in Great Britain. Class Title: Google: A Tool for Genealogy Research
Date:  Wednesday, June 20, 2018
Time:  7:00-8:30pm

Description:  Participants will learn Google search techniques and methodologies to further their genealogy research using Google Search, Google Search History, Google Alerts, Google Images, Google Books, Google News Archive, and Google Translate.
